MATERIALS
While materials are usually visible, they can't be depicted directly, as they are literally physical objects without their shape, matter on its own.
So they will be represented by some similar ideograms.

GOLD (aurum), SILVER (argentum) and IRON (ferrum) are captioned with their standard chemical element names.
STEEL is marked with a sword, as "steel" is a common metaphor for "arms".
SOIL (dirt) is marked with a shovel, the tool for digging soil.
COAL is marked with a flame, as it is a fuel.
CLAY is marked with a brick, as traditionally they're made of clay.
ICE is marked by a snowflake.
SAND is marked with an hourglass, which contains sand.

They all share the same basic shape of a rock, which itself means "hard" or "solid", "such that retains its shape".

Attribution of a material: a house of clay, a clay house.
